089-D02-351 .476 enfield Webley NO.4 Self-Extracting 51/2″ Revolver (Sometimes Called the Webley-Pryse) – Pre-1898
Introduced around 1880, the NO.4 was Webley’s first “break-neck” self-extracting revolver. Unlike later models it was locked closed by a pair of opposing levers. Revolver with this distinctive barrel lock are commonly and wrongly referred to as “Pryse Pattern” because Charles Pryse the younger (a Birmingham Gunsmith of the time) seems to have been the first in the UK to adopt it. In fact the idea originated in Belgium. the Transvaal Goverment (ZAR) purchased 400 no 4 in 1896, By which time the model was basiclly absolete. This specimen is in very good condition with an excellent bore, tight lock-up, most original finish and perfect wooden stock. the single action is fine, but the hammer may be pushed off. There is Jan Smuts” number and a small Broad Arrow D over 53 on the left-hand side.
